Examples from Novel - Literary Devices - (2) Novel Project

Digressive Time:

- During the first chapters of the book, the author starts at the present of the story and keeps going back to wha hapenned previously.
- When the capitol passes footage of Peeta, Katniss confesses to the reader and to Gale about the baby.

progressive Time:

- Mayority of the book is progressive time like in the middle, where it all haooens in chronological order.
- Also, at the long beginning, everything is placed chronologically by the author.

Suspense:

- When Katniss enters the dark room at the hospital during her visit in D8, the author describes Katniss can´t see bery well and she is surprised/scared when the patients start touching her and she cant see them.
- Katniss was also very scared or nervous when they are called to command after disobeying orders. The author describes her fright so well, you get kinda scared or hopeful to what will happen; as if you were there.

Flashback:

- During the beginning of the book, while Katniss is still understanding the revolution, she keeps remembering the moment in the arena when she was extracted.
- When Katniss gets mad at Haymitch, she uses the excuse that he could have done a better effort to rescue Peeta and then se immideately regret it because she remembers him and misses him.

Symbolism:

- In the novel Mockingjay, Katniss´ symbol is the Mockingjay. She has a pin of the mockingjay wich encourages the rebels as if she was an example to keep fighting.
- Peeta can also be a symbol for the rebels. He is shown a prisoner of the capitol which shows the rebels why and for who they have to fight for., specially as Katniss never gives up on him.

Foreshadowing:

- When Katniss is visiting D8 and they are bombed, on their way to the bunker, before Katniss fights, the author gives words in her thoughts that imideately tell the author she will fight with a motive stronger than orders.
- During the combat, Katniss ripps out her earpiece, but the author also includes during the action, that she did it because of fury that they were telling her not to do it; this let me infer that she will consider orders before obeying.

Atmosphere:

- When Katniss is angry for example, the author gives a lot of description of her desires at the moment or what would seem of she were to snap by using words that rise the tention.
- When Katniss is excited or inspired, like when she was shooting at the capitol bombers, the -

Plot Twist:

- From the beginning of the book, Katniss thought that in D13 she couldnt do anything she wanted but it all changed when Coin(leader) gave her some leash and allowed her a Gale to hunt.
- Katniss was also very protected, but then, in the middle of the plot, she is turned into a fightong soldier and in combat took down 2 capitol bombers.
