Summer Reading Book - The Hunger Games

The Hunger  Games

                The Hunger Games takes place in the now a day North America, which in the book, is the nation of Panem. Panem is made up by 12 districts and the Capitol. The book´s main characters, Katniss Everdeem and Peeta  Melarck live in district 12 but the book takes place mostly in the capitol. Katniss is a poor 15 year old girl that lives with her mother and her little sister Prim. Katniss and Prim have taken care of each other since their father died in a mine explosion. Their mother has been depressed ever since and hasn’t taken care of them so Katniss is the one that puts a meal on the table every day. Peeta, on the other hand, is the baker´s son and has never needed food in his stomach. Katniss and Peeta weren’t actually friends at the beginning of the book;* they practically didn’t even know each other.

                Some years back, the districts revolted against the capitol for harsh treatment and too much demand. The capitol won the war because of the technology they had and now has The Hunger games. The Hunger Games are a consequence that the Capitol enforces to the districts so they do not revolt again. It consists of a meeting held for each district in which two names are picked out, a boy and a girl from each district. If your name is pulled out, then you have to go to the capitol and fight to the tributes, which is the title they are given. In this case, Peeta and Prim, Katniss´s sister get chosen. Katniss doesn´t want her to go so she volunteers and here is where they officially become the main characters of the book.

                Katniss and Peeta get sent off to the Capitol shortly after they were chosen. When they arrive, there are many celebrations and training. Then they must have a test with the judges of the game to see how prepared they were so they would get a score to warn other tributes. Katniss got a 7 over 10 which is awesome and Peeta got a 4. When it’s actually time for the Games, the final celebration takes place. The tributes get a crew to get them ready and Peeta and Katniss become friends with their stylists who light them on fire. Cina, the stylist, came up with a material that lights up but does not burn. After that stunt, Peeta and Katniss are* very well known and get good sponsors for supplies in the games.

                The time finally came and they were standing ready to start. All the tributes were standing on platforms in a circle around the center of the arena called the cornucopia. The bell went off and it started. There were supplies they would need in the cornucopia but they didn’t go for that. Katniss ran to find a water source as well as Peeta. All the tributes killed each other in the main battle, well most tributes. Peeta got allied to some other boys and Katniss got a partner. When those died, it was when the rules shifted and that the tributes from the same districts could win together. Peeta was badly injured by a knife wound so he tries the rule with Katniss. At the end of the games, the remaining tributes, Katniss, Peeta and Kato, had to survive. Kato gets killed by some beasts at the end and when Katniss and Peeta were supposed to win, the rule gets lifted. They didn’t want to win without one another so they pretend to eat poisonous berries and at that moment, the rule applies again.

                Peeta was badly hurt do he was taken to a hospital right after the victory. Katniss was also being taken care of for not eating well and multiple minor wounds. When they* finally finished the treatments they were taken to the finishing ceremony where they pretended to be boyfriend and girlfriend. After the ceremony they are taken back to district 12 where they get giant houses for them and their families, and they get a lot of gifts from the capitol.

                The hunger Games is a really good book and I recommend it to anyone that likes action and survival stories. I really liked this book because I love being out in the wild and hunting and survival techniques and that kind of things. I give this book a five star rating.
